On the eve of the International Anti-Racism Conference, South Africa is demonstrating its ability to take effective action in dealing with the problem of inequality and discrimination in the workplace.
Measures to ensure the removal of barriers for those previously denied access to jobs, skills and educational opportunities have been implemented. However, transforming the labour market and economy cannot be achieved by government regulation alone. It is through partnership with workers and employers that the country's human capital will be developed. This is critical if the country is to achieve the levels of economic growth necessary for sustainable development.
Introducing equity in the workplace through the Employment Equity Act is but one of the ways of achieving these goals. The eradication of discrimination and entrenchment of equity in the workplace contributes to laying the foundation for sustainable development in our country. The disparities in South African workplaces resulting from past discriminatory laws have direct implications for economic efficiency.
On the one hand, this Act together with the Skills Development Act supports government's human resource development strategy in a complementary way. The Department of Labour is striving towards a more integrated approach that will ensure that skills development and employment equity objectives are achieved in an effective manner. Sebenza Forwarding has embraced the Government specified EE Policy by the following policies and practices:-
